🛟 COAST GUARD SURFMEN TRAINING IN MANASQUAN INLET

At U.S. Coast Guard Station Manasquan Inlet, crews regularly train with their 47-foot Motor Lifeboats (MLBs) to prepare for the over 600 search and rescue cases they respond to annually. The station, located in Point Pleasant Beach, is known for its hazardous conditions, making it an ideal location for "Surfmen" to practice their critical skills in navigating breaking waves. During the recent Hurricane Erin swell, waves reaching 9 to 16 feet provided optimal conditions for the crew to conduct heavy surf training, ensuring they maintain the high level of proficiency required to respond effectively in severe weather. The local Coast Guard Auxiliary also supports these ongoing training exercises and missions.

A Coast Guard Surfman holds the highest and most elite qualification for small boat operations, a title that dates back to the U.S. Life-Saving Service of the late 1800’s. This certification allows them to operate 47-foot Motor Lifeboats (MLBs) in the most extreme conditions, including up to 20-foot breaking surf and 50-knot winds. The training is incredibly rigorous, typically requiring at least four years of experience. Because there are only about 20 "surf stations" in the entire Coast Guard where these conditions are consistent, the Surfman certification is a rare and highly coveted achievement. The main training ground for these specialists is the National Motor Lifeboat School at Station Cape Disappointment in Ilwaco, Washington.

New since Memorial Day weekend, Confections of a Rockstar in Asbury Park is now also AP Bagel Co. The concept seems pretty straight forward. You’re already making awesome baked treats. Just turn the oven to “Bagel” and you’re off to the races, right?

We took a swing down to Cookman Ave. to see what all the Buzz was about and grabbed a pork roll, egg and cheese on an everything bagel and a BLT on an egg bagel. Our insanely tough to please 12 year old was the proud owner of the PEC and his reaction was, “how do they make a sandwich this good?” Our five year old had the BLT and said, “It’s really good. Can I have the brownie now?” We were all big fans! See you again soon, AP Bagel Co!!
