🌊 Salps in the Water
If you made it to the beach this weekend you may have noticed small, clear, gelatinous blobs floating in the surf or washing onto the sand, leaving you to wonder what they are. Fortunately, these mysterious ocean critters are almost certainly salps or sea walnuts (a type of comb jelly), both of which are completely harmless to humans. Driven toward the coast by warm offshore winds and ocean currents, salps are barrel-shaped, firm organisms that often float individually or linked together in long, transparent chains. Comb jellies, on the other hand, are squishy, egg-sized creatures that feature shimmering, rainbow-like rows of tiny hairs called cilia along their sides, which frequently give off a faint, natural bioluminescent glow in the night surf.
Despite being slightly gross, neither of these marine drift-alongs possesses the stinging tentacles found on true jellyfish, making them entirely safe to encounter in the water. Far from being a nuisance, they actually play a vital role in maintaining a healthy ocean ecosystem along the coast. Salps act as natural water filters by feeding heavily on microscopic phytoplankton, effectively vacuuming the water column while trapping carbon and sinking it safely to the ocean floor. Meanwhile, comb jellies help regulate local plankton populations while serving as an essential food source for sea turtles and larger fish species. So, if you happen to scoop up one of these squishy glass-like beads during a swim, there is no need to panic—it is simply a harmless sign of a thriving marine habitat.

🎨 Monmouth County Senior Art Show
The 2026 Monmouth County Senior Art Show is currently on display at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan, celebrating the creative talents of local artists aged 60 and older. Co-presented by Monmouth Arts, the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners, and the Division on Aging, Disabilities & Veterans Services, the annual exhibition runs through August 30 and features original works across a wide range of mediums, including painting, photography, sculpture, digital art, and mixed media. Both professional and non-professional senior creators residing in the county submitted original pieces competing across distinct categories, with top first-place winners advancing to represent Monmouth County at the New Jersey State Senior Citizens Art Show later this fall.
