Hazlet Township officially honored a local legend this week by proclaiming "Anthony Simonetti Day," celebrating the incredible resilience and philanthropic spirit of one of its own residents. Anthony Simonetti recently made global headlines by completing the grueling World Marathon Challenge, an elite athletic feat that required him to run seven marathons on seven continents in just seven consecutive days. From the freezing winds of Antarctica to the humid streets of Miami, Simonetti’s journey was a masterclass in human endurance, but his motivation extended far beyond personal achievement or athletic records.
The true heart of Simonetti's mission was his dedication to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Throughout his global trek, he successfully raised significant funds to support the hospital's mission of ensuring that families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, or housing while their children are fighting life-threatening illnesses. By naming a day in his honor, local officials highlighted how a single individual’s determination can ripple through a community and beyond. Simonetti’s story serves as a powerful reminder to Monmouth County residents that the greatest victories are those won in service of others.

A couple weeks ago we had dinner with friends at Blend on Main in Manasquan. Not our first time there of course but we were inspired. Aside from his affable demeanor and rugged good looks, Chef Lou Smith makes a Heritage pork chop that is a borderline religious experience. And since we haven’t yet sung his praises to the Monmouth Buzz community, it’s time.
Chef Lou has become a cornerstone of the Manasquan culinary landscape, famously known as the resilient force behind Blend on Main and the Peach Pit Café. While many recognize him from his high-stakes appearance on Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back, where he successfully navigated a whirlwind renovation and menu overhaul, his local reputation is built on a foundation of high-end seasonal cuisine and unwavering commitment to his craft. Chef Lou’s ability to blend sophisticated, modern American flavors with a welcoming, small-town atmosphere has turned his restaurants into essential destinations for both foodies and neighborhood regulars along the Jersey Shore.
Beyond the kitchen, Chef Lou is equally celebrated for his philanthropic leadership through his nonprofit organization, Chef Lou’s Army.
