Good morning Monmouth County! 24 years ago today, life as we know it in the U.S.A. changed forever. We dedicate this issue of Monmouth Buzz to Welles Crowther, aka the man in the red bandana who was responsible for saving as many as 18 lives in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. More on Welles below.

It’s Sea Hear Now Weekend, probably the biggest weekend of the year in Asbury Park. What you may not know though is that Sea Hear Now has a FREE Kickoff Event on Cookman Ave. on Friday starting at 4pm. They also have some pre-festival shows at the Wonder Bar and the Stone Pony but those aren’t free. Big stuff happening this weekend-seriously, a ton. Hope you get to enjoy it!!

📰 THE MAN IN THE RED BANDANA

On September 11, 2001, just nine minutes after a plane struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center, Welles Crowther called his mother to let her know he was okay before beginning a heroic effort to save others. With just a red bandana to protect himself from the smoke, he directed numerous survivors to the one working stairway, guiding them down 17 flights to safety. Among those he assisted were Ling Young, a burn victim he carried on his back, and Judy Wein, an employee with multiple serious injuries. After ensuring the groups made it to a lower floor, Crowther repeatedly went back up the stairs to help more people. He was last seen with firefighters before the South Tower collapsed. Crowther's family was unaware of his actions until survivors shared their accounts with The New York Times, identifying the "man in the red bandana" who had saved them. His body was found months later, along with those of several firefighters, in what was believed to be a command post. His selfless acts as a civilian on that day are credited with saving as many as 18 lives, posthumously fulfilling his dream of becoming a firefighter, as evidenced by the application found in his home.
