👮♀ Officer Moira Smith - 9/11 Hero
Today, on the even of the 25th Anniversary of 9/11, we dedicate this issue of Monmouth Buzz to Officer Moira Smith-a symbol of courage that day, serving as a pillar of calm amidst the chaos of the World Trade Center attacks. As an NYPD officer assigned to the 13th Precinct, Officer Smith was among the very first to rush into the burning South Tower, where she tirelessly guided hundreds of terrified and injured civilians out of the building. She is famously remembered for her unwavering composure—directing crowds with a flashlight and a steady voice—an image immortalized in a poignant photograph showing her helping a bloodied businessman to safety. Despite the imminent danger, Officer Smith chose to stay inside the tower to rescue more people, tragically becoming the only female NYPD officer to lose her life that day when the building collapsed.
Officer Smith’s profound sacrifice and lifetime of service left a lasting legacy that continues to be honored today. Prior to 9/11, she had already proven her exceptional bravery by rescuing 14 people during a deadly 1991 subway derailment at Union Square, earning the department's Distinguished Service Medal. For her actions at the World Trade Center, she was posthumously awarded the NYPD Medal of Honor, the department's highest accolade, which was accepted on her behalf by her young daughter, Patricia. Today, her heroism is permanently etched into the fabric of New York City; a New York Waterway commuter ferry carries her name, her service badge is preserved at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, and the Police Officer Moira Ann Smith Playground in Manhattan's Madison Square Park serves as a joyful tribute where children play under the watch of a true hero.

Running from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the beloved late-summer culinary showcase brings together nearly two dozen of the region’s favorite gourmet food trucks, serving up an eclectic spread ranging from lobster rolls and wood-fired flatbreads to authentic street tacos, smoked barbecue, and artisanal desserts. Visitors can kick back on the lawn to enjoy cold craft beers and specialty beverages while enjoying live music, family-friendly lawn games, and of course live thoroughbred racing all afternoon.
