We want to give a special shoutout today to Asbury Park lifeguard Alex Kaus who is back on the beach after a freak accident three weeks ago left her impaled with a metal beach umbrella. She’s not quite ready to sit stand just yet, so she’s checking badges for now. But we know she’ll be back to full duty soon! We wish you a speedy recovery Alex!

When our Sunday issue was on its way to your inbox we were getting pummeled by rain. The subsequent stormwater runoff resulted in some swim advisories due to high fecal content in the water in certain bathing areas. Although the advisories are issued by local health authorities when an initial water sample exceeds the state standards, the advisories normally don’t result in beach closings. A closing would occur if two consecutive samples exceeded the standard. And the advisory would remain in effect until samples indicated the bacteria level was back within standards.

The fun part is if you’re a local beachgoer, by the time a water sample is taken and tested and the appropriate local authority is notified to post advisories, and that authority posts said advisory you’ve probably already been swimming in gross water for a couple days. So our public service announcement is to keep this in mind after a significant storm. Unless you like swimming in fecal bacteria; in which case, do your thing.

As of this issue it appears all the advisories have been lifted. The CDC however, generally recommends not swimming near stormwater outflow pipes and of course practicing good hygiene after swimming or touching beach sand; especially before eating.

Little Silver native and Christian Brothers Academy alum Chris Gotterup claimed his second career PGA win last week at the Scottish Open followed by a third place finish at the British Open. Gotterup who has only been on the tour since last year jumped 55 spots in the FedEx Cup standings and just like that thrust himself into the “next big thing” conversation.
