An influx of mauve stinger jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca) recently caught Jersey Shore beachgoers off guard, prompting warnings from local marine biologists after multiple swimmers reported painful encounters in coastal Monmouth and Ocean counties. Typically pelagic dwellers that spend their lives in the open ocean, these small, luminescent pink-and-purple invertebrates—frequently nicknamed "purple meanies"—were pushed unusually close to shorelines like Manasquan, Asbury Park, and Seaside Park by steady offshore winds and coastal currents. Unlike the region's more common jellyfish whose stinging cells are confined strictly to trailing tentacles, mauve stingers are blanketed in active nematocysts across their oral arms and the entire surface of their umbrella bell. Even when washed up dead on the sand, their stinging cells remain primed to fire, leading beach patrols and researchers to urge visitors to steer clear of stranded jellies and treat any accidental stings promptly with white vinegar and saltwater rinses rather than freshwater.

Mediterranean fast-casual favorite CAVA is officially opening its newest Jersey Shore location at Monmouth Square in Eatontown on Monday, September 21, 2026. Located at 180 Route 35, the fast-casual chain brings its customizable grain bowls, pita wraps, house-made dips, and Mediterranean dressings to the massive redevelopment of the former Monmouth Mall site. Ahead of the launch, the eatery hosted a community preview day raising funds for Food Rescue U.S. Bridgewater, with CAVA matching local donations up to $1,000. Operating daily from 10:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., the restaurant is expected to employ between 25 and 40 local workers, joining Whole Foods as one of the very first dining and retail additions to welcome guests as the Kushner Companies project transforms the property into an open-air town center.
