If you’ve been to the Asbury Park waterfront recently you may have noticed scaffolding on the Ocean Ave. side of the building. Well, the highly anticipated restoration of the Paramount Theatre has officially moved into its active construction phase. Following a brief setback when the project’s original contractor unexpectedly withdrew, the Asbury Park City Council swiftly approved a crucial resolution authorizing an updated agreement with master developer Madison Asbury Retail (MAR). A powerhouse replacement team has been assembled, introducing Pullman SST, Inc. as the incoming contractor and the renowned Michael Graves Architecture as the construction manager. Backed by a $13 million allocation from the state's Boardwalk Preservation Fund grant, this team is tasked with rescuing this legendary entertainment crown jewel that has been closed due to public safety and structural integrity concerns.

The immediate focus of this critical phase, known as Phase II, centers entirely on protecting the exterior of the historic theater to make the entire facility completely watertight and structurally sound. Because the project relies on competitive state preservation grants, the construction team is operating on a strict, high-stakes timeline. All exterior restoration and stabilization work must be fully completed by December 2026 to secure the state funding. While interior revitalization will still require subsequent phases, this decisive structural milestone represents a massive, long-awaited step toward safely reviving the architectural splendor of the landmark oceanfront complex.
