🛟 AVON HERO HANK BUERCK
Two weeks ago 20-year-old Avon resident Henry “Hank” Buerck was honored by Assemblyman Sean Kean for his heroic actions on June 29 while working as an ocean lifeguard in Asbury Park. On that day Buerck, who also serves in the United States Coast Guard, rescued a 55-year-old boater who was violently ejected from his boat and severely injured off the 5th Ave. beach. Buerck paddled out to the vessel and quickly assessed the man's critical injuries, which included a laceration to his neck and a split shoulder, and instructed the man's son to beach their boat. This decisive action, allowed emergency services to swiftly attend to the man’s injuries and load him into an ambulance less than 10 minutes after the incident. Thanks to the efforts of Buerck and all first responders involved, the victim is expected to make a full recovery, with his son expressing gratitude to the Asbury Park lifeguards for saving his father's life. In recognition of his heroism and quick thinking, Buerck was honored by Assemblyman Kean with a joint resolution from the New Jersey State Assembly and Senate. Well done, Hank!

🍔 FOOD & 🍹 DRINK
Not gonna lie, we really loved the original Asbury Festhalle and Biergarten. We were even there it’s opening weekend in 2015. And ever since it shuttered in 2023 due to flood damage from Tropical Storm Ophelia, there has been a hole in our heart that only schnitzel can fill. Now while Sebastian’s Schnitzelhaus in Wrightstown isn’t too too far away, German fare is still very much needed in Monmouth County. Until another hero brings Bavaria back to the beach, the steins and spaetzle will have to live on in our dreams.
But that’s not the end for the beautiful red brick former home of Asbury Festhalle. The early 20th century industrial rustic building that looks like it jumped right out of Peaky Blinders will reopen in 2026 as Asbury Social, a new luxury steakhouse and seafood restaurant. The new owners, the same group that operates the House of Independents, plan to permanently transform the space, which includes an indoor dining area and a rooftop bar for seasonal outdoor seating. Construction has already begun.

🥞 Ugly Pancake Comedy Festival
The Ugly Pancake Comedy Festival will be at Wild Air Beer Works in Asbury Park as well as Twin Lights Brewery in Tinton Falls this weekend. We spoke with co-host and co-founder of the event, Angelo Gingerelli earlier this week. Angelo and his partner Joe Borzotta created the festival, now in its third year, after noticing the burgeoning Monmouth County Art scene was a little light in the comedy department. So they’ve organized a talented line-up of local comedians as well as a few more established names from up north for to bring you two exciting nights of stand-up comedy at two awesome Monmouth County breweries.
Angelo and Joe don’t just stop at the festival either. Their company, Ugly Pancake Productions hosts comedy shows, classes, fundraisers, private events, and open mics.
