Save Tillie!!

Preservationists are urgently calling on Governor Phil Murphy to establish a specific and time-bound plan for the preservation and public display of the iconic Tillie mural and 30 other artifacts salvaged from Asbury Park's Palace Amusements before he leaves office next month, arguing that 21 years of storage is "long enough." The artifacts, including the 16-by-22 foot mural painted in 1956, have been in limbo since the amusement park’s 2004 demolition, pending a long-stalled redevelopment project that required their preservation and reintroduction into a new hotel or retail building lobby wall under a 2004 state permit.

Preservation groups like Save Tillie and Preservation New Jersey, along with three local Democratic legislators, express concern that the mural, an emblem of Asbury Park's history is deteriorating beyond salvation, citing flaking paint and rusting metal signage. While Murphy has not publicly responded, his office referred inquiries to the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP); a DEP spokesperson confirmed the artifacts were observed in "satisfactory condition" during a 2018 site visit, but they have recently requested an update from the developers to ensure compliance with the permit requirements.

Preservation advocates like Save Tillie founder Bob Crane are pushing for the Governor to intervene and enforce a deadline, suggesting that resolving this "21-year-old crisis" would "work nicely" with his legacy, and stating he would even be open to a compromise to restore and display Tillie at an alternate location.

🍔 FOOD & 🍹 DRINK

☕️ Creative Cup Coffee in Wall

Thanks to our friend Kyheem we checked out Creative Cup Coffee in Wall yesterday. As we pulled into the parking lot our six year old requested an “iced decaf.” Why he knew what that was we’re not sure. But Deni, Monmouth County native and owner of Creative Cup, whipped him up an iced decaf sugar cookie latte that he said was “the best thing I ever drank.” We also tried a peppermint mocha off their seasonal menu as well as a mandatory taste test of their drip coffee.

Now we know why Creative Cup has been getting such great Buzz! Deni, who is an artist by trade, is not only brewing her coffee with the highest quality small batch locally roasted beans from Ocean Brew, she’s also pouring her creativity into every cup with original recipes that are absolutely delicious.

Creative Cup is right off Route 35 on New Bedford Rd. Mention Monmouth Buzz and get 15% off!!
