Weekend Buzz!

Derby Weekend!

Happy Thursday, Monmouth County! It’s May. It’s Derby Weekend! And we’re not going to let a little rain in the forecast stop us from enjoying it!

The Kentucky Derby, inaugurated in 1875 at Louisville’s Churchill Downs, holds the distinction of being the longest-running sporting event in the United States. Known as the ā€œRun for the Roses,ā€ it showcases three-year-old thoroughbreds racing 1.25 miles. Each year on the first Saturday in May, approximately 150,000 spectators gather to witness what’s often called ā€œthe greatest two minutes in sports.ā€ Beyond the races, the event is renowned for its traditions—sipping mint juleps, donning extravagant hats, and singing ā€œMy Old Kentucky Home.ā€
